For the past three season’s Chelsea have dominated the Women’s Super League winning three titles in a row! With stars such as Lauren James, Sam Kerr and Millie Bright they are always going to be strong title contenders. They have started the league well again this year winning 3 and drawing one, they currently sit second in the league on goal difference. Chelsea know how to get over the line and are the most successful team in WSL history, its going to take some doing to take the throne off them!
However, this year there are some strong contenders with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.
Manchester City have made a flying start to the league, only conceding one goal all season to a last gasp equaliser to current champions Chelsea. Manchester City’s defence looks solid and with a stylish way of playing they will hope to finally lift the beloved WSL title. With the likes of Chloe Kelly and Bunny Shaw they could cause problems for any defence! Manchester City have dominated every game they have played apart from Chelsea, that was due to them being down to 9 players and they still nearly pulled off a miraculous win!
Arsenal are the most decorated club in all English competitions and will hope to regain their dominance in English Football. Arsenal have not started the season as well as they would of liked however, they are still a serious contenders for the title. With the likes of Alessia Russo upfront they can achieve anything and no team will feel safe against Arsenal when they hit form. Beth Mead has also returned after a horrific injury which led to her missing the World Cup. This is a huge boost for Arsenal! At the moment they are conceding to many goals, once they sort this they can climb up the table and challenge their London rivals.
Manchester United have done relatively well since forming in 2018. The club has funded Manchester United so they can start performing on a competitive stage straight away. They will hope they can carry on with the positive trajectory and start to challenge for the top prize. They might be a few years of this just yet due to the loss of Russo to Arsenal but they still have a lot of quality in the squad!
Women’s Super League Standout Players
Sam Kerr is renowned as one of the best strikers in world football, the Australian has achieved very impressive numbers since she joined in 2020. The 30-year-old has scored an astonishing 54 goals in 58 appearances in the WSL, and she’ll be hoping to add to her tally this season. Kerr has also received Chelsea’s Player and Players’ Player of the Season awards, winning the former for the second year running.
She scooped the FA WSL Player of the Year trophy at the London Football Awards for the second consecutive year and if that was not enough, she became the first player to win the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year prize twice in a row. She was also named in the PFA’s WSL Team of the Year.
After a brilliant world cup Lauren James will hope to bring this form for Chelsea. Still young at the age of 22 the English star will hope to be a standout player this season in the WSL. The sister to Reece James is a very skilful player who can glide around players like they are not there and keeps the fans at the edge of their seat.
Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw
Shaw is a prolific striker who strikes fear into most defences across the league. At aged just 26, the Jamaican star is leaving a ever lasting impression for WSL followers. Scoring for fun in Manchester, Shaw is an exciting player who is keeping the blue side of Manchester real title contenders.#
Daly may not play for one of the big four but she has been excellent in previous years. She has had a unusual position change from left back to striker. But this has been a stroke of genius as the English star scored Daly scored 22 goals in the 2022–23 WSL season, winning the Golden Boot and equalling Vivianne Miedema's record for the most goals scored in a single season. She was also awarded Player of the Season.
Russo has been a excellent piece of business by Arsenal WHO joined on a free from rivals Manchester United. Russo has done nothing but impress fans all across the WSL in previous years. With her lethal finishing and trickery on the ball the English star could be a huge hit in trying to catapult Arsenal to the top!
